In 1782, peace talks between several of the countries involved in the war began in Paris. The talks led to the Treaty of Paris. In it, the British agreed to recognize the United States as independent as long as the Americans agreed to the boundaries of their new country: the Atlantic on the east, Canada on the north, the Mississippi River on the west and Florida on the south, and they agreed to "earnestly recommend" that restore rights and property taken from Loyalists during the war. On August 15, 1783 Congress approved the treaty and the war was officially over.
